This article examines a rectangular foundation pit 815 dating from the fi rst half of the 4th century BC.
It was excavated in the “Upper City” sector of Phanagoria in 2014. This pit is very important in helping to determine stratifi cation and chronology of the sector. The pit was sealed by remains of a mud-brick wall on a stone plinth, destroyed in the second half of the 4th century BC. Based on the analyses of the architectural remains preserved inside this pit, it is possible to outline a general picture of the building activities in the central Phanagoria in the fi rst half of the 5th century BC. After the area was destroyed by fi re in the second half of the 6th century BC, the mud-brick houses and pits seemed to have functioned in 480–470 BC. The houses of the later period are dated to 460s BC.
